2011 Advent calendar – Day 17 Sunburst { fine art photography in Warwickshire }

An extreme example of iPhone lens flare taken back in August.  I love the vivid colours it creates with a bit of tweaking in Lightroom.  If I remember rightly, the day had started off cloudy but we were blessed with a gorgeous, almost cloudless blue sky in the afternoon.

2011 Advent calendar – Day 16 Millenium bridge

A view that I’m sure needs no introduction.  It’s been on my ” To Do” list for a while and the chance arose to take it on a long family weekend trip to London, courtesy of a Friday teacher training day in September.  The cloudy conditions made an ideal backdrop to St Paul’s.

2011 Advent calendar – Day 15 Hint of spring { fine art photography }

In a few weeks’ time I’ll probably be taking a similar picture as I can’t resist witch hazel blossom.  It’s the first splash of colour of the year in St Mary’s church garden in Warwick and a sign that spring’s on its way.  I caught this one on my iPhone one lunchtime when the sun was just at the right angle to highlight the blossom and create some great lens flare.  Once upon a time lens flare was frowned upon as a flaw in a photograph but I love the effect it creates and like to shoot into the sun wherever possible.

2011 Advent calendar – Day 14 Solitude { fine art photography }

Another picture from our Easter holiday.  I took this one while we were doing the Ingleton Waterfall walk.  I love trees silhouetted against the horizon and the late afternoon sun was just in the right place to highlight this one.  I’ve darkened it slightly in post-production but otherwise it’s pretty much straight off the camera as I had this end result in mind when I took it, so adjusted my camera settings accordingly.  You can make a bright afternoon look like night time if you want, so if you’ve got a camera that allows you to override its automatic exposure mode, I’d encourage you to play around with the ISO, aperture and shutter speed to see what effects you can create.

2011 Advent calendar – Day 13 Piggy portrait { animal photography }

The weather was gorgeous at Easter this year and we were lucky enough to be on holiday near the Lake District staying on a farm, which meant I had loads of opportunities to photograph the farm animals.  Taking animal portraits is similar to photographing people – focus on the eyes to capture their personalities.  There were sheep, cows, ducks, hens, etc but the pigs were particularly photogenic and reminded me of the ones in ‘Shaun the Sheep’, so this one gets pride of place as Day 13 on my advent calendar.
